Joseph Dogooder has dreamed of being a EMT since Preschool. First its what his grandpa and Dad both do and doing good is in his family’s name. He jokes he was born for this job. So it should come as no surprise that on his 18 birthday, while others wanted to throw a party for him he wanted nothing more than to enroll in an EMT school to learn to help and save others.

He enrolled at a school in Brooklyn, labeled as the “best outside program”.

“While other kids were celebrating, Joey had me drive him to this school to enroll remembers” his dad, Stevie Dogooder. He also admits his son tried to join the local volunteer ambulance squad at age 12, telling them he was 18.

Most kids hid playboys under their beds at 16. But at that age Joey had a fully stocked jump or trauma bag under his and a scanner to listen to Ambulance in his community. By 17 he new all the “10” codes. He would joke with his mom, when she yelled to do the dishes his reply would be “yeah 10-4 Mom”.

Then it should come as no surprise that after his first week at EMT school he sprung into action. It was day 5 and he just been taught CPR.  His class was given a 30 minute lunch break, while the rest of his classmates were studying for the upcoming CPR final. Joey had noticed a EMT/POLICE/FIRE supply store across the street.

Joey just couldn’t resist. He had noticed a new LED Flashlight in the window, the newest model. It took 27 size D battery’s and had a pair of wheels on the bottom. The thing was so big that when placed in the duty belt the bottom would drag on the floor, the company added wheels on the bottom to prevent it from dragging.

Once he paid for the $469 dollar light, he bought the 27 size D battery’s for another $167. Outside of the store Joey walked over to the intersection and waited for the crosswalk signal to say walk. That’s when he met Mr. Barry Jacobs.

Mr. Jacobs a deaf, blind, mute has just left a learning center in the area for the mute and blind. Barry uses a special stick in his hands to feel the sidewalk end and the street began. He usually taps a person for assistance in crossing. He carries a sign attached to a chain around his neck that reads “Please help me cross, I’m deaf, mute and blind”.

Almost everyone he has met has helped Barry cross until he met Joseph.  Mr. Jacobs felt his walking stick leave the sidewalk and fall about 4 inches meaning a street with traffic was ahead of him, he did like always and reached out with his hands to feel for a helper that’s when his hands landed on Joseph’s shoulder.

Joseph turned to see Mr. Jacobs pointing at his neck… the EMT student knew for sure it was one thing. The universal signs for a choking victim. He asked 3 times if mr Jacobs was choking, but there was no reply. That’s when he sprung into action. Joey grabbed Jacobs spun him around and began to perform the Heimlich maneuver.

EMT instructors looking out the window saw this, thinking it was a real life and death situation caution others to call 911 and ran out of the building to assist.

On duty medics arrived in response to the 911 call. The EMT student was demanding the so called Choking victim to lay down so he could perform CPR. His instructor looked horrified noted one of the responding medics, who also admitted he laughed so hard he pissed himself.

“His instructor kept telling him the man was ok, but the student kept saying he cant talk and was reaching for his neck I’m almost sure he’s choking. We could all see he was pointing at the sign, but the kid was so jacked up he never saw the sign.”

The instructor finally got the Student to calm down and convince Joey the man was just deaf and mute.

That’s when the Barry jumped to his feet to try to escape and ran head first into a street pole. Causing a laceration that required transport to a local Hospital for treatment. The senior medic and EMT student instructor had to restrain the Student so he could not try to help while the on-duty medics partner wrapped up the victims head.

The EMT School had no official Comment but admitted that the new student had been suspending pending a full investigation. The Disabled man was released from the hospital after receiving his stitches and the 2 responding medics have begged for the student to do ride along’s with them, stating they never laughed so hard and look forward to the comic relief with having him as a third on the truck.

We will update this story as new info become available.

As always brothers and sisters , the most important thing is to make it home at the end of your shift, stay safe!
