In the years since launching The Fire Critic, dozens of other fire service blogs have popped up. Many seem to all be covering the same topics. Rhett realized that none of the new startup blogs cover what it is like to be away from the firehouse. He also noticed that his most popular blog posts are the ones that address his off-duty exploits.

The Fire Critic blog is arguably one of the top fire service blogs currently active. Lt. Fleitz says he wants to walk away from his old focus while on top, versus wasting away into obscurity. He also knows that his new niche is one the fire service needs addressed.

“A fire wife is a special kind of woman. Many of the ladies in our neighborhood have this Tuesday night Happy Hour group, but my wife can’t always go due to my working every other Tuesday. These other ladies just don’t comprehend I am gone 24 hours, or more, at a time to work. So now my wife is always being snubbed by neighbors because of the realities of the firehouse.”

Rhett says that to keep a good fire marriage firefighter need to be a good husband to a fire wife.

“There is this awesome community online called “Firefighter wife”. They are an online support group for ladies married to firefighters. My goal is to become the male counterpart to that page. A site dedicated to the husbands of firefighter wives, cause without the husbands of firefighter wives, there wouldn’t be any firefighter wives…just wives.”

Once the new site launches Rhett says he will have sections that discuss

  • Becoming a first time dad
  • Daycare issues
  • Helping with homework
  • Other parenting tips
  • Household chores 101
  • Grocery shopping
  • Cooking
  • Vacations
  • Non-fire related hobbies
  • Home décor tips
  • Date night etiquette
  • Gift giving advice
  • And yes even some sex advice

Rhett’s final thoughts were “On duty we have all kinds of fire ground tactics to stay alive. But off-duty we in the fire service need to learn tactics to keep our marriages alive.”

At the time of our interview Rhett was not willing to disclose the URL to the new web page. So check back with us here at CallTheCops to learn that when it goes live.
