Kelly Grayson article causes massive number of EMTs to quit

Kelly Grayson is well regarded Paramedic and author. But his recent article on EMS1 calling EMTs “Low Information Voters of Healthcare” has caused many in EMS a self realization. Coming to this realization a massive number of EMTs have walked away from their jobs.

In the article Grayson details a rant posted on Facebook by a young paramedic. The rant starts with the statement “There is no such thing as a professional EMT. There are only paramedics and ambulance drivers.” You can read the full text of this rant in Grayson’s article linked above.

Grayson then explains his feelings about what percentage of EMS workers take their career seriously by keeping informed on topics and seeking out training opportunities. This math resonated with many EMTs, who realized they were not serious about being in EMS. As such they quit.

David Mazzuchelli vice-president of staffing for Wayne Brothers EMS, a private EMS firm, told us this. “In the last week we have lost almost 30% of our work force. The local college told me that 15 students have dropped out of EMT classes. It is like people got this wake up call and decided they could not deal with reality.”

EMT (well now former EMT) Alan Moore told us this. “At first I was mad at Kelly for writing this. Then I re-read it and realized how true it was. It was not him I should be mad at, it was me I was mad at.”

Grant Morrison is still working as an EMT but is considering quitting. “I told my boss I was quitting. She asked me to stay for few weeks and do some soul searching. She then handed me a stack of magazines. Told me when sitting post someplace to read an EMS magazine, versus watching Netflix on my iPad.”

Morrison went on to tell us about how in reading a magazine he learned a tip. Later that afternoon he put that tip to use. He felt empowered and feels a desire to learn more. “Maybe an old dog can learn some new tricks, I guess we will see.”

We tried to reach Kelly Grayson for comment but he was unable due to time constrains of trying to write for his own blog which you can find here. We are hoping for his comment in the comment section below.
