What should have been 7 days of really fun instruction turned out to be a waste of time. 14 Brand new FDNY-EMS cadets that were just hired by the city to assist in life threating calls have to retake a E.V.O.C. ( Emergency Vehicle operations Course) a Fdny Chief ordered Monday. It all started when the 2 instructors found a EVOC book and Power point Slides that they thought were the Most updated material. Instead they picked up a older course taught back 50 years ago.
Instead of being trained to race around the streets of Nyc, performing awesome jaw dropping 360’s with great precision and parallel parking. The new cadets were trained on how to feed and water horses that would be pulling the EMS carriages. A Practice that was ended with the last horse owned by the City’s Ems system being sold sometime in the 1960’s when Ford introduced the new Engine Ambulances, plagued with transmission problems and mostly out of service even to this day the new trucks were still considered better than the horses. That didn’t stop the instructors from going out and buying 2 race horses from a near by race track and casino for the mistaken training class anyway. One cadet was quoted as saying ” I couldn’t wait to get the New 4 door Ambulance’s up to 90 or 100 mph like I heard they teach here, instead I’m running behind a horse drawn carriage with a pooper scooper” Another had this to say ” Instead of being trained to say pull to the right over the pa system, I’m being trained on how to say yee ha and kiddy up, I just want to go home”
It was well into day 6 when the major mistake was even realized. The Evoc course located at Fort totten queens had a little frost on the ground from the colder than normal temperatures from the closeness to the bay of water and the horses began to slip a little. Scared that a chief would be demoted again if one became stuck in a full storm the Instructors called Headquarters to order chains for the carriages. It was then that the Mistake was brought to light. The 2 Instructors Are back full duty and still teaching ,no charges are expected against them as this was ruled a mistake. The FDNY plans to sell the Horses to the Nypd’s Mounty division. Oddly the pair of horses have been named “crash and burn”
