The Village of Deonach has decided it is time their community has a police department. Villagers though are not willing to see a major increase in their property taxes. So they will do with their police department exactly what they do with their fire department, make use of volunteers.
Residents in Deonach have became fed up with slow response times from sheriff’s deputies. The village has recently experienced a rash of break-ins to homes when owners are on vacation and also to businesses. Response times from the county have been up to an hour.
According to the sheriff he only has a handful of deputies on the road at any time. With so many small towns and villages in the county lacking a full time police force his patrol units get stretched thin.
Village chairmen Don Davies tells CallTheCops creating their own police force has been on the wish list for years now. This latest hiccup with slow response was the tipping point.
“The sheriff is doing the best he can. He has limited resources just like we do. He can’t hire on a bunch of more deputies anymore than we can afford to pay cops to work full time.”
According to Chairmen Davis the idea came from the fire chief. “When the fire chief had his families business broken into he had to wait for a deputy. That afternoon he was in my office saying how he has 52 guys willing to drop everything at the drop of a pager tone to fight fires. He then asked why the village could not find some people to give pagers to so they can fight crime.”
Initially these volunteer cops will only respond to crime and accident scenes to do the investigation. There will not be volunteers out on patrol.
To be an officer applicants need to be a village resident. They also need to be older than 21 and have a spotless criminal record. Applications can be picked up at the Deonach village hall during normal businees hours.
