Chief surprised to find out good officer sucks as a leader

Chief Brian Willis recently promoted officer Duane Wolfe to the role of sergeant. In the three months Wolfe has been in charge of the night shift he has failed to take an effective leadership role with his officers. The Chief is stumped as to how any why such a stellar officer could suck as a leader.

Stripes don’t make a leader

Before Wolfe was the night shift supervisor officers working after midnight were the most product at the department. Today they are about the least productive. According to one source it due to lack of leadership.

“The new Sergeant wants to be our buddy not a leader. He will talk about how things need to get done and hope someone will volunteer. When no one steps up, the Wolfe just goes and does it himself. Everyone has learned to just shut up and let him do it.”

Delegation is not his only fault. Discipline is very haphazard.

“I got into a fender bender with my squad car and he said it was no big deal. Then a week later a citizen comes in to file a frivolous complaint about me using the word “dam” in public. Wolfe calls me in and yells at the top of his lungs at me for twenty minutes for using a curse word. Seriously, he drops f-bombs all the time and wants to get all high and mighty about the word dam.”

The chief can’t fathom why Wolfe is failing as a supervisor.

“He was one of my top cops. Always he the best numbers at the end of the month. He interviewed with the civilian police commission and they liked him. I even got him new uniforms with stripes on the sleeves so people will know he is the boss.”
