Police angry with revenue seeking mayor refuse to issues speeding tickets

Officers in Avido are pushing back against a greedy mayor. The mayor recently push forward a proposal to both increase the cost of traffic tickets, and lower many speed limits. The city counsel passed the proposal commenting on how it would bring in so much added revenue.

traffic-ticket-300x1991Avido police officers were not happy to be told their primary mission was city fund raising. So as a result officers have refused to issue traffic citations. Nearly all traffic stops are ending in a verbal warning. The exception being any DUI related traffic contact.

Officer Bill Williams, president of the local police union, tells CallTheCops the police chief is in support of the officers. “Our boss is one of them old school guys. You know the kind that wants cops to be involved in the community and solve problems. He always says if cops want to do traffic stops all day, they should join the state patrol.”

Union members meet after the resolution was passed and voted as a group to stop issuing tickets. As soon as the mayor heard about this vote he called for the chief to institute a quota system. The chief, backed up by the city attorney, pointed out that state laws forbid any kind of quota system.

According to Williams, “The mayor was irate. He started tossing around words like performance expectations and activity level normalization. But the chief kept saying that synonym for quota is still a quota.”

Citizens seem to be in support of the police department. Many we talked to commented about how they want a police force that services the citizens, not tickets them into submission.

The mayor would not take our calls, nor did he reply to emails.
