Inmates at the Sanda Detention Facility in Hoygo S.C. have filed a handwritten lawsuit saying the Sanda County Sheriff is depriving them of their first amendment right of freedom of religion.

Inmate Akaushi Kuroushi (Cur-o-she) claims that The Prime Church demands that, among other food items, he eat one 10 oz piece of Prime Rib every Friday as part of his ritual sacrament.

Kuroushi told this reporter; “It’s a small sect that has broken off from the Lusitanian religion. We mainly practice in small groups at members homes. However several inmates have started to follow me in my rituals”

Kuroushi went on to say that grilling the meat over an open fire and allowing the smoke to rise into the sky also is a major part of this sacrament. “Having the smoke and odor of the meat rise, allows the gods to enjoy this sacrament also.”

Another part of The Prime Church’s’ sacraments is to consume an alcoholic beverage while eating the meat. Kuroushi said that he knows that the Sheriff’s Department has budget problems so he and his followers will just use Pruno (a inmate made wine, considered contraband) instead. “See we are willing to work with the jail staff to address this problem.” Kuroushi said.

When contacted, Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman Sgt. Karen Wagyu said that her department takes freedom of religion very seriously and is looking into using an alternative meat for Kuroushi to use. “Maybe a cheaper cut like flank steak or a N.Y. cut.” She went on to say that the other foods such as potatoes and fresh vegetables are already available from the inmate store.
