Firefighters depressed over loss of favorite Chili recipe

With frigid sub zero temperatures for the second day in a row the Firefighters on B shift decided to make a pot of Chili. Problem is the recipe for their favorite version of chili has gone missing.

Firehouse Chili

For years the crews at House 16 had been using a recipe invented by firefighter Bill Karins. But Karins retired three years ago and moved to Florida. At his retirement party he entrusted the recipe to then Chief Greg Forbes.

Then last year Chief Forbs retired. The chief claims he left the recipe in a folder in his desk with other popular recipes. But no one is able to find it. Current Chief Harry Wexler claims there is no folder of recipes in his desk.

A number of firefighters at House 16 claim they saw Chief Wexler clean out his desk shortly after his promotion. Meaning it is possible that the chief tossed the document out unknowingly.

Undeterred by the loss B Shift took to the grocery store to make chili anyhow.

“We thought we could recreate something very close. But it was not the same. That chili of Karins had something special in it. I would not call it a secret ingredient, but something in there is different from a typical Chili. No one could recall what that special something was.”

Excitement filled the kitchen as the stockpot of chili was created.

As the crewmember sat down the excitement reached a tenor. Disappointment quickly filled the room as the first few bites of chili were eaten.

“It was an OK chili. You know it was eatable. I would compare it to the Chili you get at some chain restaurant. People will eat it, but they are not making a special trip to seek it out. We ate it, but no one went back for seconds.”

Typically the stockpot is empty of Chili by the end of the meal. This batch was only half eaten.

After diner many of the crew simply went to their bunkroom and called it a night. Usually after the meal the crew hangs out in the day room, watching TV and playing games. But this chili disaster was just too much.

Crew members said they have placed calls to retired firefighter Karins to get a new copy of his recipe.
