City IT department turns off internet access due to “Fire Porn” email

Chief Billy Goldfeder sends out a regular email newsletter called “The Secret List”. Last Friday his email contained links to some videos of fires in progress, labeling them Fire Porn. Computer geeks for the city monitoring traffic on the city network keyed on in the use of the word porn and have overreacted.

The city of Kingfish provides high-speed Internet to all of the city fire houses. Command officers have access to computers in their office space, but front line firefighters need to bring their own device. The city does not provide Wi-Fi so firefighters purchased their own router. Most firefighters bring a laptop or tablet to work for use during down time.

Preston Parker the city Information Technology director tells CallTheCops his department has been monitoring firehouse use of the internet for some time. “We notice a sharp increase in data use during the evening. Lots of streaming video going into the firehouses. I am sure many are just watching normal TV… but some we figured are accessing adult content.”

While the city can tell that the firefighters are on streaming video services like Netflix or Amazon Prime it can’t tell the titles being watched. Even the mainstream services carry NC-17 rated movies, sometime called “soft-core porn”.

“Over the weekend we saw every access node carry the same email. Keyword scanning software picked up the term “porn” in that email multiple times. In addition the links in this email referenced this porn as being “vintage”, “dirty”, “a quickie” and “heavenly”

Director Parker said as soon as his people alerted him to the violation of city internet use he order all access to firehouse cut. When this reporter tried to point out what the term “Fire Porn” actually means (videos of structure fires and firefighters attacking the fire) he refused to believe the explanation.

“You sound just like the fire chief. You firemen and police officers are all the same. If you screw up you make up stories to protect each other. Face it… my IT guys caught the firefighters sharing dirty videos and now they have to pay the price.”

Dave Statter the self-proclaimed Larry Flint of Fire Porn had this to say, “BillyG is lucky he did not link to a video of Rhett Fleitz, AKA the Fire Critic, otherwise that City IT department would be turning BillyG in for child porn investigation.”
