During the Tuesday night city council meeting Bardus fire chief made this statement to the council. “Your not paying my firefighters anything already.”

The council president asked the fire chief to excuse himself for disrespecting the council. “Sir just because you are unhappy with your pay is no reason to make exaggerated claims we are withholding the pay checks of your firemen.”

The fire chief attempted to clarify his statement. “I am not saying the city is withholding our pay. I am saying we do the job for free, you know as in… volunteer.”

The chief was then told to leave or be escorted out by a police officer. The council president added that if the chief uttered one more word of disrespect he would be fired.

With out saying anything the Chief smiled and simply walked out of the room.

A number of members of the community had turned up for the meeting to offer comment on the proposed pay cut. After witnessing the expulsion of the fire chief they all left with out addressing the council.

When the vote was called the council was unanimous in approving the pay cut.

Out side city hall the chief had this to say. “10% of nothing is still nothing. Volunteers are not paid. I can’t figure out why they don’t get that. This vote did nothing for the city but waste time.”
