A relatively new staple in female fashion is about to become a uniform standard also. Yoga pants have been accepted by multiple police departments now as a uniform pant option for female officers.

Officer Jenny Keough is credited as being the originator of the ideas pushing for this to be a new uniform option. Keough first brought the idea up on an online discussion in a Facebook group for female officers. One day about 3 months ago she posted this ‘Just had a 4 day weekend, where I was in yoga pants the whole time, now putting on my uniform pants for work, soo wish my uniform pants were comfy like yoga pants.’

That posting was liked by over 300 of the 800 members of the private Facebook group. That post also has almost a thousand comments on it. The majority of the comments are group members agreeing with Keough.

“It took me a few days to work up the courage to ask but I went into the chief and asked. He at first said no, but then said would reconsider if I could show proof as to why yoga pants could be good for a uniform pant.”

So Officer Keough took to doing some research into studies on utility and function of uniform pants. Her research showed that uniform pants should allow for flexibility, freedom of movement, and thermal protection. Yoga is all about flexibility and freedom of movement. So yoga pants met that first requirement. The fact she is living in a warmer southern climate provide that perfect balance of being cooler on hot days yet still warm on chilly nights.

She documented her findings in a five-page report. That report even included recommendations on the brand of pant to be used. Her chief was impressed and after talking to his command staff the uniform policy was amended.

Officer Keough posted he report, and a copy of the new policy to the female law enforcement group on Facebook. Others have commented on the post that they have presented it to their chiefs. So far according to Keough seven people have messaged her that their chief has agreed to the change also.
