Hipsters Swell the Ranks of New EMT’s

Hipsters are joining the ranks of future emergency responders and with them come their unique sense of style, music and outlook on life. What does this mean for the veteran medic, EMT or ambulance driver?

As one senior medic put it, “These damn hippies come in here with their skinny EMS  pants that make me want to puke every time they bend over and expect us to respect and tolerate them? The problem started when he turned off my favorite classic rock station, right in the middle of Foghat, to some bluegrass, banjo strumming shit on his iPhone that I’d never even heard of!” And the issues continued, “Next he tells me we can’t eat at my favorite taco joint any more because it’s ‘too pedestrian’ , whatever the fuck that means.”

Another EMT from New York relates the difficulties he faced when his new partner showed up for shift on his bicycle and a beard like a homeless drunk, “He had a purse over his shoulder, well he called it a European handbag, but it was definitely a purse, then he asked me where the bike rack was on the unit. And it’s also the apathy towards patient care at times, I remember one patient we had that was circling the drain right in front of us and this guys says some shit about ‘The circle of life’ and begins performing Tibetan Monk chants while lighting incense in the back of the rig!”

With this influx of new world beatniks comes the odd uniform requests, as one uniform supply officer states, “First it was those skinny EMS pants that they had me order, or the one guy that came in wanting me to approve these bell-bottom EMS pants he claimed were vintage 70’s, but my favorite was the guy that had custom-made buddy holly style safety glasses, seriously?”

Of course there is always two sides to every story, Matthew Stevens sees things differently, “Hipster? I’m no hipster man, I’m just progressive, you know the future of our generation,  bringing you the love of the new world. I just want to help out my fellow man. I read this great book while backpacking through Europe about the modern day ambulance driver and while lying in a hostel bed outside of Paris I pondered how I could change someone’s life and here I am…” When asked about how he felt he was being treated by fellow responders he had this to say: ” They’re just uneducated in the ways of being worldly, like a newborn kitten that has yet to open their eyes they will someday understand that we can get along. Tomorrow I’m bringing my tambourine and this EP of a great new jazz infused gypsy band I discovered and we can sip on some chai tea while watching the sunrise over the city.” To which his partner replied “Get a fucking life.”
