Man in 4×4 applaud to get cited for “Too Fast for Conditions” after crash

Seth Varick is very proud of his brand new Silverado 2500HD Z71. This weekend after freezing rain hit, Varick was in a minor collision where he rear-ended another driver. Officers cited Varick and he now is upset because his 4×4 is built for the winter weather conditions.

4x4 truck

$90K and it still can’t stop on ice

Varick a financial planner and commodity trading advisor got this truck to make sure he never missed a day of work due to snow.

“I use to drive a BMW. As a financial planner driving a European imports is important to show how successful you are. None of my contemporaries drive a Ford or Chevy. But after missing a bunch of days at the office last winter I decided to get something build for snow.”

Seth tells us he got the most tricked out truck he could get.

“I got every option that Chevy has and the dealer put on a bunch of aftermarket options also. This truck cost over $90k. It might be a domestic truck but we got it up there in league with the European imports. No one can say I am slumming it by having a truck now.”

The issue in question happened just after 7pm on Saturday night. Varick was driving home from his spinning class when the car in front of him slammed on their breaks for a yellow light. When Seth hit his breaks he did not stop as expected, he hit the car and sent it spinning into the ditch.

Officers issued Seth a single ticket for “Too Fast for Conditions”. By his own account he was traveling 5MPH over the posted limit. Seth also made comments that he could have easily made that yellow before it turned red. Saturday had freezing rain all day and after the sunset and temperatures dropped road conditions became very hazardous.

The officer who responded, Officer David Drew, told us this about the incident.

“I told him I was cutting him a break. Based on what he told me and what I observed I could have issued multiple citations. Too fast for Conditions was the cheapest ticket and the least number of points. Then he gets huffy with me, saying ‘I have a 4×4 truck weather can’t affect me.’ He even had the guts to say ‘if you can’t drive at your normal speed due to weather then get off the road’. I tried to tell him that a 4×4 has no bearing on stopping ability but he was adamant his truck could work winter driving miracles.”

When we talked with Seth he was still adamant he did nothing wrong.

“When you drop $90K on a truck it is going to be weather condition proof. Trust me that is what the sales guy said. He told me flat out this truck could drive through any snow or ice storm that winter would give us. If you ask me, I would bet a car dealer would know a lot more about what a truck is able to do than some cop ever will. I don’t think that cop even listened to me about the fact I have 4-wheel drive. I don’t know maybe he just needed to meet a quota or something.”

Seth indicated he would be talking to the police chief later today. We at CallTheCops don’t think the chief will be voiding the ticket.
