Let it Burn: Michigan Orders Disbandment of Detroit Fire Department

This just in!  After spending all of 18 minutes in a closed session, and in an unprecedented move, the Michigan House of Representatives (HOR) has voted unanimously to disband the Detroit Fire Department (DFD).  Insiders tell us that this city-wide shut down could occur as soon as Monday (September 16, 2013).

What exactly does this mean for the citizens of Detroit Fire Down in FlamesDetroit, a city that, for all intents and purposes, is on the brink of a complete collapse?  What is to come of the Detroit Police Department?  Will martial law be implemented within Detroit city limits?  Will the National Guard be called in to respond to fires and medical calls?  How will this shutting down of a vital – literally life and death – public service impact the adjoining cities of Highland Park and Hamtramck?

While we weren’t able to have any of our direct questions answered by any HOR member, we were able to do a bit of eavesdropping and gain additional details on what can only be considered an “abandon ship” type of move.

Here’s what we know…

As early as 0600 hours (6am) on Monday, September 16, Detroit Fire Department will shut down their 911 dispatch center.  All inbound 911 calls will be forwarded to an automated message requiring the caller to press 1 for police response and 2 for fire or medical response.  Those callers who select option 2 will be routed to an automated message explaining that due to the recent financial crisis, Detroit Fire Department is unable to respond.  It is unclear if the caller will receive any further instructions.

Immediately following the transition from a live 911 call-center response, all DFD stations will be ordered to close and secure all doors, man all fire engines, trucks, and support apparatus, and drive them out of Detroit city limits.  They will likely stage all apparatus in the nearby town of Dearborn.

Once all DFD vehicles, property, and employees have been accounted for, local news outlets will be requested to broadcast an emergency public announcement.  What will be stated in this announcement is anybody’s guess.  We’ll all find out soon enough.

We reached out to “Detroit Fire: Rising from The Ashes,” a nationwide organization of anonymous fire, EMS, and law enforcement professionals who have been working tirelessly to save DFD to get their take on the recent development.  A spokesperson for what has been called “The Phoenix Project,” who requested to have his name withheld, stated “While we are obviously puzzled by why the State would make such a move, this doesn’t mean that we’re giving up.  In fact, this only strengthens our resolve.”

It is still unclear whether or not the state of Michigan even has the authority to mandate the disbandment of a city fire department.  Whether or not they do, the public needs to act and act quickly.
