According to a statement released by the agency the hacking will not disrupt public safety. The statement also claims that private personal data kept in arrest records was not breached.

“Booking photos (AKA Mug Shots) are saved on a desktop PC sitting in the booking room. All arrest data and confidential data such as names, birthdates, addresses, phone numbers and driver license numbers are saved within a database on our server. That server is held behind a firewall that was not breeched. Citizens we have had contact with will not have to fear their personally identifiable information is out in the open.”

One confidential source tells us that the city Information Technology department has found the source of the breech.

“City hall has an open public Wi-Fi for the meeting rooms. The booking room for whatever reason is wired into the city hall side of the buildings network. So that desktop is not behind the police dept firewall. Someone used a simple exploit in the system to connect to that PC via the Wi-Fi. The it was just a matter of replacing all the photos with a new image.”

Police and City officials were not willing to comment on steps the city was taking maintain better information security.
