Being drunk on duty saves Firefighter’s life

Controversy over some departments allowing firefighters to be on duty with Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) of up to .08 has been headlines lately. But it seems for one firefighter his intoxication helped to save his life.

Firefighter Randall Cobb fell off a three-story apartment building roof overnight. Witnesses say the fall looked like it would have been deadly, or at least caused some great bodily harm. But Cobb walked away from it with only minor bruising.

Incident commanders insisted that Firefighter Cobb be transported by EMS to the local ER. Lab tests showed Cobb to have a BAC of 0.06. His ER visit also verified the fireman was not injured.

Doctors tell CallTheCops it appears his intoxication saved his life. “Most people in a fall tense up so the sudden stop causes a shock to the body. From the descriptions of this scene the patient just rolled off the roof and that rolling aided when he hit a balcony railing. The railing must have slowed his decent so he struck the ground at a less jarring speed.”

Critics question if a sober firefighter would have even fallen.

Department administration insists this fall would have happened no matter what. They are also quick to add that for fire apparatus drivers there is a zero tolerance policy for alcohol.

As for Firefighter Cobb he told this reporter, “I just need a drink to settle my nerves and I will be good to go.”
