Officers coming out about fat shaming at the police department

A disturbing new trend is making waves all over the US, Fat Shaming. This act of fat shaming is when people who are physically fit make obese people fee uncomfortable about their size. To some the act of fat shaming is tantamount to bullying.

Two police officers from the Corpulentia police department have filed a complaint with the police chief over being fat shamed on duty. Their fat shaming has come from fellow officers, local fire fighters, and even members of the public. Officers Mark Morales and Damon Wimbley claim this fat shaming is affecting their mental wellbeing and work performance.

Officer Morales, who tips the scales at 360lbs, said this about how officers bully him. “These guys walk around with shaker cups drinking their muscle shakes. The locker room has posters of muscled up meatheads at the gym with de-motivational captions about ‘hard body = sharp mind for duty’ and ‘train to win so you live to the end of your shift’. Every day someone comments, even the sergeants, about my choice of fast food for meals, and how my uniform looks tight. They need to learn to back off! I am not genetically gifted to be a body builder, I was born big boned.”

Officer Wimbley, weighing in at 380, told us his story. “The officers making fun of us are bad. For my birthday they got me a Subway gift card. The note in the card said something about how I should stop super-sizing my meals and start to be like Jarrod. But for all the harassment my co-workers give me, it is nothing compared to the citizens. People in public feel they have the right to call me names and question my ability to do my job.”

These two officers are not the only officers in the nation being fat shamed. Wimbley and Morales say that since they have come out about their abuse other officers have reached out to them. The two said they are setting up a support and advocacy group.

Wimbley said “We even have firefighters emailing us about being fat shamed at the fire house. Our support group will be for anyone in public safety.”

Corpulentia’s police chief did not want to talk on the record. He did reveal that his department was researching a fitness policy. Included in this policy would be a yearly fitness test similar to test required to pass before being hired.
